Two More Methods to enable regedit

This two methods I discovered on Ramesh’s troubleshooting Windows site – windowsxp.mvps.org.

First method

Type this command in Run box and press Ok.

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Second method

Using Group Policy editor. Once again in the Run box, type gpedit.msc and press Ok. Go to User Configuration-Administrative Templates-System, double click Disable registry editing tools and set it to Not Configured. Exit Group Policy editor.

UPDATE: Start your computer in safe mode with command prompt and type the following command to enable registry editor:-

reg delete HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system /v “DisableRegistryTools”
and run HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system /v “DisableRegistryTools”

After you have run both commands your registry editor should be enabled

Found this on Rahul’s website. It was showing others how to remove Brontok virus actually, but since Brontok too disables the Registry Editor so it’s worth a shot.        :D

    @ Dr ahmadi – Dear Dr, you may try and download a vb script by Doug Knox to enable back your registry editor. Please go to http://www.dougknox.com/security/scripts_desc/regtools.htm
    right click the link and be sure to save it as regtools.vbs
    Hope this method work for you. After you have downloaded regtool.vbs, just double-click the file you download and your Registry Editor should be working.

    follow this steps

    Step 1: Hit the window or click start button then press “r” or simply click the run

    Step 2: type gpedit.msc

    Step 3: Click on Administrative Templates

    Step 4: Click the System and locate the Prevent access to registry editing tools and double click on it

    Step 5: Select the enabled on the optionbutton the click apply.

    This will make a policy to prevent access to the registry editing tools, The computer will automatically made the policy.

    Step 6: After clicking on apply select the disabled in the option button then click the apply again then click ok button when finished.

    nice work dude. my regedit was restored by method two. at first i was hesistant because the registry editor is set to not configured. what i did is i set it to enabled then apply and set it again to not configure then apply. then magic… it works.
