MacFixit gave the following guidelines before upgrading to Leopard ( OS X 10.5 ) to avoid issues, before and after upgrading.
- Backing up your data
- Preparing your startup disk
- Make sure all devices are synchronized prior to updating
- Disconnect all external devices, update firmware
- Make sure that you are using the latest firmware
- Archive and Install: A Hassle eliminator
- Make sure you’ve upgraded all of your applications to Leopard-ready versions, if they are available
- Disable plug-ins and other application add-ons (or upgrade them)
- Check for, and delete, corrupt .plist files
- Hold off on running DiskWarrior and other directory utilities after updating
