Troubleshooting Windows Explorer Errors

Have you even come across this message , “Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.”

According to, Windows Explorer crashes due to two main reasons :

  1. 3rd party shell extensions that are not functioning properly.
  2. Existence of viruses or spyware on the machine.

3rd party applications will add their own “action” to this menu, and this can cause problems. To try and find which 3rd party app is causing the problem, you should use ShelExView

For the second cause of the problem, HelpWith recommends that you use online virus scanner such as eTrust, Trend Micro’s HouseCall, or the Online Scan from RAV.

For spywares, use Ad-Aware or/and Spybot Search & Destroy.
